We got to Page, booked into the Super 8, and headed toward the Utah side to see if we could find out about current conditions from the Escalante Grand Staircase BLM headquarters. They made the situation quite clear: all roads were closed. Just about the time we were leaving home, they got hit with a 100-year flood, and road dropoffs were as high as seven feet. They said, not even in a Hummer. Bummer. So we headed further up the road to the Pariah headquarters to see if things were better there. On the way, we noticed this pullout, a gate, and a couple of parked cars. The Pariah ranger was not encouraging about matters that day, but thought maybe the next day things would improve. So we asked, what's at that pullout? That? Just some hoodoos. It's about a mile in. Since the ranger seemed to think it to be utterly without interest, we knew it would probably be good. You learn that after a while. So off we went. This is near the end of the hike to the inner valley. If you find this place, you'll know when you get there. Don't worry about it. Maybe you can see how wet the wash is (normally dry) and how steep the side cuts are. The roads looked much worse. Okay, I stuck this picture in because it looks kind of floody. Also so you'll think this place isn't all that special. |
