Flagstaff to Marble Canyon

NEXT

Escaping Lake Havasu City, we hotfooted to Flagstaff for a thoroughly pleasant evening at the Days Inn (yet again). Dinner was at a local Mex spot just up Milton Road; they had reasonable sopaipillas and the food was quite good. A franchise-free day.

The next day we made the short and scenic run up to Page, which drifts past the tail of the Painted Desert. There are some nice Chinle formations right along the road.

Ak scored a replacement wedding ring at the Chief Yellowhorse Roadside Emporium, a favorite spot. They had a wonderful T-shirt with the caption "Homeland Security: Fighting Terrorism Since 1492" with a picture of Geronimo and some of his buds. I was only prevented from getting it by the fact that this was Navajo country and he was Apache. Related, but not the same.

As you climb the plateau to Page, a roadside stop gives a great view of Marble Canyon (above), the far upper end of the Grand Canyon, in a sense. The little white dot below the low cliff on the right is probably Cliff Dwellers, a delightful little roadside restaurant near some truly weird stone dwellings.
