Greater Hobart suburbs from the top. In the middle is the Glenorchy,
Moonah and Derwent Park area. That's probably the biggest flattish spot
in the city, so it was the logical place to expand. The port of Hobart
proper was placed at the first real narrowing of the Derwent estuary,
which is just right of this photo.
In the narrow part of the Derwent river just slighty above center and a
bit to the right you can see the Bowen Bridge, built as a safety valve
should the main Tasman Bridge get knocked down again (a ship crashed
into it in the '70s). This end of the bridge is named, oddly, Dowsing
Point. It's hard to imagine any significant difficulty finding water
there.
In Glenorchy can be found the Northgate Shopping Center, which shows
up on maps. It features a Coles supermarket and a fair-sized Target
store. Across the Tasman Bridge there's Eastlands Mall, with not
only a Coles supermarket, but also a Woolies. No Target, but they do
have a K-mart. How can you not like such a place?
Okay, in the downtown area (which is not far from either mall) it's
still possible to find Macy's-class Fooferias, but still. They're
probably for tourists. I don't think any self-respecting Tasmanian
would be caught dead in such a clap trap.
