Five Views Of Zabriskie Point

Doubtless one of the most amazing views on earth.

After a short drive up from the main resort, you come to this parking
lot. Note the deep cut to the left of the lot: that's essentially
a new channel being carved by a stream that was diverted away from
the road some years back. It's not considered a terrible thing, since
it was in the process of redirecting itself this way before the
diversion was created.

I tend to think of the left side as the more dramatic. Here we see
a roughly 90-degree view in fairly even light. Note how it darkens
as we move right in the frame. This is not a shadow over the hills,
but just the change from sidelight to backlight. A weird but normal
effect of panoramas.

A picture of almost identical size, but made in a very differnt way.
The first shot is five horizontal frames composited; this is twelve
vertical frames covering something more like 130 degrees (doesn't look
all that different, does it? But it goes all the way to Manley Beacon,
the subject of our next shots). Note the "bright" area to center right:
I'm shooting directly into the sun there, and couldn't quite get the
values to match up.

The crags to the left are the beginning of the Manley Beacon area
that can be seen in the right of the previous pic. This photo is a
simple composite of three pics, and almost looks normal.

A much wider "vertical" composite where I think I got a better light
balance than the shot two up. Note the overlap. There were seven or
eight exposures assembled to make this.
