When Steam Engines Go Bad

In the northern end of Death Valley you can see direct and recent
evidence of plutonic activity. In fact, you can drive right up to
Ubuhebe Craters and walk 20 feet for these views. If you want to
see the less spectacular Little Hebe, you gotta do some cinder
climbing, which all cinder cone enthusiasts know, is just about
as nasty as it gets when it's hot. That day, it wasn't.

Composite of nine vertical images. No matter how hard I tried,
I couldn't get the light values to match up, so I gave up.

Ten verticals from a better vantage point. I wish I could have
done a better job on these. The crater is magnificent.
The title? These explosive craters were formed when whater and magma
married under the dirt, like most volcanic explosions.
