Rollin' Rollin' Rollin'

The most famous thing about the Racetrack (a very flat, sandy mostly
dry sometimes lakebed) is the weird rocks that slide around on it
when nobody's looking. Strange as that is, I thought the obtuse
island right in the middle of it actually made a more bizarre
impression from the moment I saw it.

If you look away from the Track toward the north, there are hills that
show spectacular banding, evidence of the strata and uplift in the
area, but more important: just spectacular. This is a simple four
part composite shot horizontally.

None of my pictures really gets the idea across about how weird this
island looks. The lake bed is huge, and extends way behind the island
as you see it here. This is as simple as it gets: two shots glued
together in the middle.

The island from the backside. Four horizontal shots (out of laziness
I'm standing much closer than the previous spot: that was shot "on
approach" while I had to walk beyond the island to get this). Alas, if
you want to see some rock tracks, Akkana will have to put them up.
She figured out how to shoot them, and I didn't. (Mine suck).
