Grant Ranch is on the way up to the observatory on Mt. Hamilton just
over the east foothills from San Jose. It's typical of the east in
that it's steep and hasn't as much tree coverage because it's hotter.
That makes the east a good place to go in winter, when you want full
sun -- in this case February 1, 2003.
Grant is a bit strange in that it has a lake and quite a good flat meadow called Hall's Valley. It's a nicely run park, and though the grassy-parky area is modest, the hiking zone is enough to run anybody into the ground. The winter light can be stunning. |
