As you get close, things get a bit more jagged, and the overhangs get more pronounced. This is not, by the way, a formal trail of any sort. Upheaval Crater is big enough to form its own watershed, and this is it. Runs from inside the dome to Labyrinth Canyon. Long stretches are kind of like coarse beach sand, and there's often no practical alternative to sandwalking. As you beachgoers know, that makes ten miles seem like a lot longer than ten miles. We were losing time. Nothing serious, but things weren't exactly going as planned at this point, and I posited to Ak that the going would get a bit rougher near and in the dome. She didn't seem to think so. As it turned out, we were both right. |
