The spot in the last photo is very near the beginning of the trail, but also the deepest crossing we did. It's in a dark section that's much deeper than it looks -- she's standing on a sandbar that you have to trace mostly by feel. You cannot see the bottom at that point. Gave us pause. I did venture out first, but when I started finding a way through it, a British (I think) guy behind me got impatient and just slogged through, accidentally finding the right line. Good for him! Note she's wearing her jacket on the last page, but not on this one. At this point, we didn't know how long we were going to be cold... and shortly after we made deep ford, we turned a corner and negotiated the rocks you see here to get to a sandbar that was in sunlight, and warm. At that point I put my jacket on, but Ak held out for quite a bit longer. The photo on the previous page was shot on the way out, when the light was more favorable. I got nothing useful there on the way in. It was quite dark, with the glow at her back. These transits were mostly tricky because of all the rocks in the riverbed. Very slick. |
