Ak can see Sphinx Rock now. Yep, that's the trail behind her. In the
end we went back down it muttering things like "did we really climb
this on a casual hike?"
A word about Tasmanian trail recommendations: in touristy areas such as
the Tasman Peninsula (where tenderfeet are expected) you can generally
cut their time estimates in half. But if you're in a place where the
times might be for Tasmanians, take them at face value. The Organ Pipe
Zig-Zag trail is described as 'moderate,' but a typical American park
visitor would describe it as The Tortures Of Hell. Basically straight
up a cliff, and their time estimate is spot on. Though shorter, it has
some of the same character of the worst parts of the trails down the
Grand Canyon (see my Trail Of Doom page on that).
Nothing we couldn't take in stride, but great fun to see them as
'moderate' (a description with which I heartily agree).
