Tufa forms underwater, but as the lakes dry up it surfaces. Particularly good examples can be seen at Trona Pinnacles, where the lake is long gone, evaporating after its water supply faded thousands of years ago. Mono, with some water still left, is considerably more scenic and probably quite unique in the world. Congratulations to the southland voters for giving up a bit of water to keep it alive. As a northerner I was delighted to see this altruistic turn of events. Angelenos can do the right thing. |
