The Postpile is only open in warm months due to snow blocking the steep road in, which is why July. Why the various park services are so in love with The Devil's This And That is entirely unclear to me, but this is one of the better ones. And only a hundred miles or so from the Devil's Punchbowl! The center section of the formation is a perfect example of straight-up slow crystalized granite forming into roughly hexagonal columns. Conditions must be stable for a long time, since the granite must cool very slowly and too much movement would create warp. We'll see some of that. |
