The shot left shows Ak ascending the "moraine" at the rim of the crater. It's a strange structure whose evolution defeats me, but it has to be traversed. The drainage stream becomes a waterfall here, and the only way out if you can't do a 25 foot sheer drop is to climb the berm and go over the edge. I sincerely regret not taking a picture of the initial drop, which is very scary. A mistake puts you fifteen feet down on jagged rocks, and there's not much margin for error. After that, you negotiate a tiny ledge for 20 yards or so, and suddenly here's this ad-hoc staircase of shale we see Ak dancing down. Can't resist those composites. Only four more miles! |
