Little Low-power Via EPIA-800
Did some fairly careful Kill-A-Watt testing. The results?
the stuff you see here uses slightly under 12 watts at idle.
In "pig mode" that jumps up to something like 20 watts.
It's screwed to a plate carved from
a surplus computer case, which is mounted directly to
the wall. The switches and LEDs are off the right and the hard
and power supply are on the other side of the wall.
Note the nifty wood cable plate!
The board is about seven inches square, or roughly 18 cm to a side.
For a size reference, the two slots running nearly the full height
on the right side of the board are the sdram chips. Right next to them
are the blue IDE sockets.
Of course, it's running Debian.
Break On Through To The Other Side
The noisy (and warm) drives are in the garage, where they
don't overheat and annoy the office workers. Note the fan
from the power supply keeps the drives cool(er).
But even the Via's tiny fan turned out to be annoying in the office,
so they've moved out to the garage.
Secure Server
At first it was propped on the shelf, but it fell off one day,
so now it's been made into a "secure server":
I'll do a better job of the notes and photos later...
